December's LIFEnews provides an opportunity to take stock of the last 12 months and look forward to what the future might hold for LIFE in 2011. In this special end-of-year edition we speak to the heads of the two LIFE Units ('Nature' and 'Environment and Eco-Innovation') in Brussels and ask them about their perspectives on the current programme, as well as its potential successor. We also highlight how LIFEnews readers can contribute to shaping the future of EU environmental policy.

November's LIFEnews reports on new Natura 2000 guidance covering Europe's extraction industry and highlights LIFE project outcomes that have helped this important economic sector to support nature conservation objectives. Featured projects include LIFE Nature actions from the Czech Republic in a sensitive limestone landscape, and from the UK where good practices have been developed regarding extraction of river gravel. LIFE Environment's EcoQuarry project is also showcased for its achievements in restoring Mediterranean quarry sites.

This month's LIFEnews takes a look at how LIFE projects have helped to protect Europe's natural resources by supporting the roll out of Environmental Management Systems. Projects featured in the newsletter include innovative integrated approaches to EMAS and eco branding involving multi-national partners. Also covered in October's LIFEnews is a recently completed project from Spain that launched a species recovery programme for endangered bearded vultures.

This month’s LIFE news examines issues surrounding sustainable soil management and unearths a range of different LIFE activity involved with supporting the conservation of EU soil resources, such as a successful Spanish LIFE project focused on preserving hillside soil stocks in the Mediterranean. Other projects spotlighted by the summer edition of LIFEnews highlight habitat improvements in the Belgian Flanders and a multi-national river basin management initiative from the western Balkans.

This month’s LIFEnews focuses on the publication of the latest European Red lists of endangered species. It highlights the threats facing Europe’s butterflies, dragonflies and beetles and presents a number of LIFE projects that have been working to improve the conservation status of these species. Additional projects covered are a LIFE Nature project investigating ways of avoiding cross-contamination with GMO crops and a LIFE TCY project developing a coherent soil monitoring system in Croatia.

European sustainable energy initiatives form the focus for the March edition of LIFEnews, which profiles the recent Energy Days taking place around the EU and features a selection of LIFE project contributions to European energy policy agendas. Other projects covered in the newsletter include LIFE Nature’s support for endangered bird species in the Azores and a life-saving flood protection system in Egypt’s Sinai desert funded by the TCY component.

LIFE contributions to species conservation are profiled in the newsletter which also features results from projects helping to reduce noise levels around EU ports and improve hazardous waste management capacity in Turkey.
