To realise the aims of EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), knowledge of a wide area of river ecology and water pollution control methods as well as practical tools for the cost-effective integrated management and monitoring ofriver basins are needed. The RiverLife project (LIFE98 ENV/FIN/000573) presents in this publication an interactive computerbased Decision Support System, RiverLifeDSS, that helps local and regional authorities, private companies and consultants to integrate environmental considerations into land use planning and management practices in river basins.

The preservation of the landlocked population of the Adriatic sturgeon in the Ticino River was the aim of an Italian LIFE project (LIFE03 NAT/IT/000113). Three publications present the project’s result and include a survey of sturgeon and other fish species; information on the autoecology, molecular genetics, reproductive and spatial behaviour; as well as the description of a sturgeon action plan drawn up by the project and adopted by the park authorities.
