LIFE among the olives: good practice in improving environmental performance in the olive oil sector

LIFE among the olives

2010 - 58 pages

The EU is a global leader in olive production, accounting for almost 70% of total world output, and is the main net exporter towards non producing areas such as North America. The olive sector is particularly important in southern countries, where it represents a significant share of the agricultural economy and provides considerable employment in olive processing. But the economic benefits of olive production come at a cost. Olive farming has become more intensive in recent decades, using increasing amounts of water and chemical inputs, and olive processing produces significant and growing volumes of waste. The LIFE programme has been targeting these issues, and this brochure examines how LIFE projects are helping both olive growers and olive processors to improve their environmental performance. It also highlights good practices and approaches emerging from these projects that could be adopted more widely within the sector.
