Trichloramine and Asthma in Swimming pools & spas Problem solved

2006 - 6 pages

LIFE-Environment beneficiary Dryden Aqua Limited (UK) has published a paper on trichloramine production in swimming pools and its connection with asthma in children. The paper finds that using Active Filter Media (AFM) in swimming pools as an alternative to sand is effective in limiting production of trichloramine.

Dryden's AFM was developed with assistance from the LIFE-Environment programme through the project “Development and applications of advanced filtration medium” (LIFE02 ENV/UK/000146). AFM is derived from waste glass and removes at least 30 percent more solids from water compared to high quality silica sand.

Towards Sustainable Urban Transport Policies. Recommendations for Local Authorities

SMILE Recommendations for Local Authorities

May 2004 - 68 pages.

The partners of the SMILE project (LIFE00 ENV/F/000640) prepared 170 successful and replicable practices for sustainable mobility. Their analysis led to the preparation of recommendations for local authorities, which are presented in this guide. SMILE considers this guide as a tool that can help to facilitate the replication of these practices, and enable a successful Sustainable Urban Transport Policy.

Guidelines for Road Traffic Noise Abatement

Guidelines for Road Traffic Noise Abatement

57 pages.

The main focus of the 'Guidelines for road traffic noise abatement' (as part of the SMILE project - LIFE00 ENV/F/000640) is an identification of innovative activities directed towards reducing noise due to urban traffic. Practical principles are elaborated with the aim of pointing out existing potential for noise abatement measures in a field for which local authorities are responsible and can therefore more easily take action. This publication aims to present and to disseminate innovative and successfully implemented examples of noise abatement planning in selected European towns and cities.

Sustainable Mobility for All!
How to reflect the needs of special groups in local policies to encourage sustainable mobility

SMILE - Sustainable Mobility for All!

47 pages.

This brochure is meant to support local authorities all over Europe in coping with the challenge of adapting their transportation networks to the demands of ALL users and implementing land use policies to facilitate sustainable mobility. It is based on findings from the SMILE project (LIFE00 ENV/F/000640) questionnaire, case studies, and an extensive review of recent research and experience.

Bioindication and Air Quality in European Cities: Research, Application, Communication

Bioindication and Air Quality in European Cities

Verlag Günter Heimbach, Stuttgart, 2002 - 295 pages.

Air pollution continues to be a major environmental hazard in cities despite progress in the reduction of emissions made during the past decades. The LIFE Eurobionet project (LIFE99 ENV/D/000453) assessed and evaluated the effects of air pollution using bioindicator plants within a network of cities in 11 European countries. The book comes with a CD ROM with a detailed description of the project. More information is available on the LIFE project database, and on the Eurobionet website.
